Industrial placement year

An industrial placement year is a great way to help you decide what kind of career you might like when you graduate. As well as giving you the opportunity to develop your own skills, you’ll gain a real insight into working life in a particular company or sector in the music industry. More than two-thirds of all employers are now offering placements or internships to students, with up to one-third of new graduates recruited directly through employers’ work experience programmes (High Fliers report 2015).

Internship opportunities have included placements with major music organisations such as Warner Music, English National Opera, and the Leeds International Concert Season, but you can also explore placements such as music therapy, education, orchestral or band management, in the UK or abroad. In recent years students have taken placements in organisations such as Faber Music, Grand Union Orchestra, and Scottish Opera. One graduate has recently opened the New York office of WilKatPR, following a placement with the company.

Rhian Hughes, BA (Industrial), WilKatPR

Spending a year in the ‘real world’ gave me a great insight into what I can expect from life after university, as well as really opening my eyes to the different roles available within the arts sector.
