Laurence Jones, BA Music
I am a recent graduate on the BA Music programme here at Leeds. I have enjoyed studying a wide range of topics throughout my course, ranging from composition to popular hip-hop culture in the 80s. However, my true passion is film music. During first year of my course, I relished the opportunity to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the background of music in film. During years my second and third years, I have been able to apply this knowledge and have had some fantastic opportunities to work with other students in different schools on short film projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with directors from other schools and the process of writing for film of within the high quality studio facilities the university has to offer. I have never struggled to find volunteers to perform my work as the department (and wider university) has a plethora of musicians who are more than happy to collaborate and help you out!
Outside of my course, Leeds is a great place filled with opportunities and the university provide great support for anything you want to pursue. I played rugby for the university, which is a great chance to meet new people in a new environment. The business and career support offered is also second to none. With great advice and mentoring, the university has helped me set up a business and network with working professionals in many disciplines. The city of Leeds has a great culture, offers a seemingly limitless amount of entertainment and is full of like-minded students!
