Shaun Crowther joined the world famous Williams Fairey Brass Band in 1975 as principal tuba, a position he held for 25 years. In September 1997 Shaun enrolled as a mature student at the Royal Northern College of Music and graduated in 2001 with a B.A. (Mus).
Whilst at College, Shaun decided to take a break from brass bands to concentrate on a freelance career. He has since performed with the Hall, Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and Opera North as well as many other provincial orchestras. Shaun has also worked extensively in the chamber music field, performing with Hall, Brass, Ulster Brass, Nemo and Sonar Brass Quintets, as well as with the British and Northern Tuba Quartets. Shaun returned to brass bands as principal tuba with the internationally acclaimed Grimethorpe Colliery U.K. Coal Band.
In September 2002 he joined the Kingston upon Hull Music Service as a teacher specialising in lower brass. As well as his teaching in Hull, Shaun is the specialist tuba teacher for Huddersfield University and has been lower brass tutor to the National Youth Wind Orchestra. He continues to perform regularly in many different musical genres and is in great demand as a player and tutor.
