Mike Woodhead

Michael Woodhead studied the trumpet under Cecil Kidd at the Royal Northern College of Music and was the recipient of the Candlin Exhibition Scholarship and the Hiles Gold Medal for orchestral playing. On completion he was awarded the Graduate Diploma as well as the Associate Diploma for both teaching and performance, with distinction. It was during this time that he gained his first professional experience with the Halle Orchestra.

There followed a period of free-lancing with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic orchestras, also playing Principal Trumpet with the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and as guest Principal with the Ulster Orchestra. He was subsequently invited to become a member of the Orchestra of Opera North on its formation and has remained with it ever since. With this orchestra he has combined a dual role in the theatre and the concert hall, performing an extensive repertoire and touring in this country and to most other countries in Europe. He has recorded for Chandos, Deutsche Grammophon, Hyperion, ASV and Naxos amongst others.

Michael is an experienced teacher from elementary to post-graduate recital level. He is trumpet tutor in the music departments of the Universities of Leeds and Huddersfield, and is currently Specialist External Examiner for the Leeds College of Music and Royal Northern College of Music. He has also been a brass coach for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain for many years.
