Jason Huxtable

Percussion, Kit

Jason is currently a freelance percussionist based in the Midlands and maintains an exciting variety of musical activities in a range of settings and musical genres. Trained as a ‘classical’ percussionist at Birmingham Conservatoire he won most of the prizes available and was awarded a rt class honours degree and the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Performance with distinction along with the course prize for overall excellence. As a classical percussionist he has performed with many of the region’s most established ensembles including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the BBC proms, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Ex Cathedra and the Birmingham Contemporary music group but has also appears in groups and ensembles playing styles ranging from heavy metal to bhangra, performing at many of Europe’s biggest music festivals (e.g. Glastonbury, Cheltenham Jazz) and on mainstream media.

A passionate chamber musician, Jason has performed with numerous contemporary music groups and percussion ensembles. His own duo Maraca2, with partner Tim Palmer, is an ensemble that is internationally recognised as making a significant impact on the development of the genre and is one of Europe’s most commercially supported percussion ensembles, with endorsements from Sabian cymbals, Marimba One marimbas and Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets. Maraca2 are also active in the field of music education and have given workshops and masterciasses around the world including Birmingham Conservatoire, the Royal Northern College of Music, University of North Texas, Fundacian Cultural Patagonia and Walsall football club! In addition to this Jason also works independently as an educator and currently holds teaching posts around the Midlands and including Visiting Tutor in mallet percussion at Birmingham Conservatoire and visiting tutor in drum kit and percussion at Coventry University. To enrich his one-to-one teaching activities he regularly involves himself with various educational projects delivering to a wide cross-section of the community.

Jason is an experienced adjudicator and is a regular examiner around the world for the ‘Rockschool’ examination board assessing popular/contemporary musicians. In addition, he has examined performance students for Coventry University and Birmingham Conservatoire. As an academic, Jason has written module materials and examinations for the Birmingham Conservatoire’s ‘rhythm studies’ component of their ‘musicianship’ course. Current projects include completion of an ‘encyclopedia’ of percussive motion combinations, arrangements of Classical guitar repertoire for marimba and a pedagogical text for percussion duos.

Jason continues to combine a passion for self development with a love for performing, always gaining huge satisfaction when guiding others to achieve their own musical goals, aiding their exploration of new musical ideas.
