Genna is from the north east of Scotland and started playing (a very tiny!) bass for free as part of a local authority backed initiative when she was 8. She later went on to gain an entry scholarship at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where she studied with Iain Crawford. In 2005 she was awarded a scholarship to study with Timothy Cobb at the Juilliard School in New York, from where she graduated in 2007. Genna has won several prizes for both her solo and chamber playing, including the NYOS Staffa award in 2005 and in the summer of 2006 was invited to study with Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas. Previously a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, since 2013 Genna has been a principal bass with the Orchestra of Opera North and recently led the bass section for the orchestra’s recent production of Der Ring des Nibelungen.
