Austin Gunn made his operatic debut as Vorsinger Zaide with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras in the Edinburgh International Festival.  Other notable EIF performances include 1st Tenor Soloist Curlew River and Zweite Lehrbube Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

His Scottish Opera debut was covering Don Ottavio Don Giovanni and singing the role in the Scottish Opera Unwrapped performances throughout Scotland.

His English National Opera debut was as Guest John Cage Dinner Party for ENO MusiCircus, he has worked with ENO in every season since.  Other ENO performances include covering Pliable/Superstition/Celestial Voice A Pilgrim’s Progress and Dantine The Perfect American, and Gizmo 3 The Way Back Home and Security Guard Between Worlds in preproduction workshops in collaborations between The Barbican, Young Vic and ENO, an ENO Late Shift Recital at the National Portrait Gallery, he is core principal tenor for ENO Baylis Know the Show events as Tamino Magic Flute and Alfredo La Traviata, a member of ENO Opera Squad 2015 and 2016 singing Nanki-Poo The Mikado and Don Ottavio Don Giovanni in schools performances and has appeared as guest soloist with the ENO Community Choir.  Austin also completed the ENO artist training programme ENO Operaworks where his roles included Vogelsang Der Schauspieldirektor, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni, Lensky Eugene Onegin, and Grimoaldo Rodelinda.

Other roles include Martin in Zad Moultaka’s Hummus and Manager in Stephen Oliver’s The Waiter’s Revenge at the Musica Na Fabrica Festival in Lisbon, Portugal directed by Max Hoehn, Bobby in the world premiere of The Fisherman’s Brides by Lucie Treacher in the Tete a Tete Opera Festival, Aubry Der Vampyre (Rocket Opera), Dormont La Scala di Seta (Rocket Opera), Frederick Pirates of Penzance (Opera Anywhere, Rocket Opera), Nanki-Poo The Mikado (ENO Opera Squad, Opera Anywhere, Rocket Opera), Gastone La Traviata (InterOpera), Don Ottavio Don Giovanni (Rocket Opera), Don Jose Carmen (Black Cat Opera, Grimsby Philharmonic, Rocket Opera, OperaLab), Tololler Iolanthe (Rocket Opera), Defendant Trial by Jury (Rocket Opera), and he performs extensively in opera galas for Black Cat Opera, Impromptu Opera, InterOpera, Rocket Opera and Opera Anywhere throughout the UK. Forthcoming Roles include Beppe in Donizetti’s Rita (Rocket Opera) and Box in Sullivan’s Cox & Box (Rocket Opera).

Austin has appeared as a soloist in concert and oratorio in Sweden, France, Italy and throughout the UK and makes his Swiss debut as the title role on Dvorak’s The Spectre’s Bride in 2018.  As a recitalist in 2014-2015 he performed ‘Tennyson’s Lyricism and the Composer’s Response’ at the Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle, and ‘Languorous Ecstasy’, a selection of works by Libertine poets, at Hull University and a selection of Victorian and Edwardian medicinal song for the VIP relaunch of The Wellcome Collection in London.

Recording and film credits to date include Montague John Cage Dinner Party, Maxwell Davies Solstice of Light, 1st Tenor Soloist Curlew River, Zweite Lehrbube Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg all for BBC Radio 3, a recital of song for American television network PBS, and as the singing voice of a German soldier in the television series ‘Band of Brothers’ directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

Austin was head of studies for OperaLab for five years and has taught at York and Glasgow universities and he currently teaches at Leeds, Hull and Durham universities.  He has given masterclasses at the Cite des Arts Internationale in Paris, for OperaLab in Brussels and at various universities.
