Teaching Experience

York University (from 1982); Salford University; Bradford and Ilkley College; Ants International Skill Centre.

Currently teaching at York College – where I am also Vocal Tutor for Music Theatre courses; Harrogate High School; Leeds University; private teaching in York and Geneva. WORKSHOPS: I have run singing workshops in York, Hull, Cleveland and Sheriff Hutton. also both direct and co-direct choral singing days and weekends, where the idea is to have a great time singing music that is both fun and challenging.

VOICE WORKSHOPS: My interest in all aspects of good vocal use has led me to devise and present workshops for companies seeking to improve their voice and presentation skills. Companies I have worked with include BMW, Yorkshire Water, Nissan and Visa International. I work also with teachers. In 2002 I produced a CD with supportive material.

Recital and Performance Work

I have performed as recitalist and soloist in Britain and Europe and broadcast on Radio 3 and local radio. Sung with various vocal ensembles including the Clerkes of Oxonford, Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and was a founder member of the Yorkshire Bach Choir. Sung at the York Festival, York Early Music Festival as well as for Music Clubs and Societies across the country. I perform regularly with the Fairfax Ensemble, with whom a CD was produced to celebrate the music of Mozart and Haydn in 2007. We recreated as closely as possible the sound they would have known by recording in the salon of Fairfax House ( a Georgian town house in York) using a one keyed flute and an original square piano.

REPERTOIRE: I have sung music across the centuries, from plainsong to contemporary music, from Baroque to Lieder, French and English Song and theatre music by Cole Porter, Gershwin et al. ..even Grieg in Norwegian! I have also performed contemporary music by such composers as Kagel, Cage and Weir alongside works by Nicola LeFanu, Roger Marsh, Lisa Rheim, Christopher Fox and others, a number of which I first performed. CD recordings include ‘You, Us Me’ with songs by Fox and `Partita for Strings and Piano’ with songs by Bryan Boulter.

Conduction and Community Choir Work

I have run two community choir projects at York Theatre Royal and Harrogate Theatre, transforming a number of people, all ages and abilities, some of whom had never sung before, into a choir in collaboration with Lip Service Theatre Company.

I currently conduct the Fairfax House Singers (York); a string orchestra at Harrogate Music Centre; Jubilate Choir (Easingwold ) and Soundsfun Choir (York), formed after the Lip Service project. Soundsfun recently ‘flash mobbed’ the General Synod in York and sang in the EborVox celebrations in York with 600 other singers, great fun….and we were on TV!
