Transmedia Performance: New Environments, New Work

Lecture Theatre 1, School of Music

The speaker is Dr Sophy Smith (DeMontfort University).

This talk explores the emerging practice of transmedia performance. An extension of transmedia storytelling (the practice of telling a story across multiple platforms), transmedia performance events integrate performance with online digital participation to create multimedia cross-platform performance experiences that are exciting, immersive and participative. Transmedia performance involves creating work that engages audiences by using various techniques to permeate their daily lives, developing stories across multiple forms of media.

Through using online social spaces including Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, text and email, transmedia performance events weave together physical and online worlds, blurring the distinction between reality and fantasy, audience and performers, potentially making audience members part of the work itself.  This talk will discuss specific examples of transmedia performance practice, reflecting how these new environments have not only instigated new ways of working, but have led to the creation of new forms of work.
