Leeds-based Latin American quartet, Mestisa will be performing a concert journeying through Latin America via its musical traditions. They will explore the roots and pathways of Latin American music, incorporating the elements that led its creation and evolution through cultural encounters. For example, African drummings meeting Indigenous musics and further influenced by European colonialism. They will demonstrate, with the help of Leeds University Percussion Ensemble, the new methods Latin Americans have employed to make their music with the resources available, eg new instruments and musics born from these encounters. Mestisa will also, through performance, incorporate the resulting influences of people immigrating from Latin America into other parts of the world and affecting the music there.
